Bonsai in the Midwest

Hidden deep in the heartland, a tiny oasis of bonsai can be found. Hidden from the world except to those who seek it out, a permanent exhibit of bonsai trees can be discovered at the Des Moines Botanical Center, 909 East River Drive, Des Moines, Iowa. Tucked away on the banks of the Des Moines River, the Botanical Center is the home of a collection of excellent bonsai donated several years ago by a patron.

One specimen, a gingko biloba, began its training in 1865. Unfortunately, due to the glass enclosure, the photo was of poor quality.

Mid-America Bonsai Alliance

The Mid-America Bonsai Alliance is an eight state organization made up of local bonsai clubs and societies. This site has terrific information and ways to contact the nearest society to you, if you live in the Midwest.
